ARCHITECTURAL DESIGN PROJECT
The design project is divided into three main phases:
Project 1a: PreDesign Phase: site studies, urban/contextual analysis, impact analysis and initial design intention and studies. 1b: Schematic Phase: design strategies, exploration of spatial organization and form design. 1c: Final Design phase: Final Presentation and Comprehensive Report.
This project is based on the major user of the city center of Johor Bahru, which is the transient group. A breathing/resting space will be provide for them following by a main circulation, which is called ‘transient period’ as people had a chance to choose to other destination while moving to another.
Basically is to provide city spaces which are used as a gathering point for people in the city and offers a wide range of disparate activities, a platform for collaboration between different age classes, interests and social background to create a healthy environment for appreciation of difference and similarities.
PROJECT 1a: Pre-Design Studies & Analysis
Project 1a is a group project, focus on site analysis and precedent studies where will assemble all the parts and pieces to a bigger picture. Parts will include the following aspects: historical background, user profile, environmental studies, building codes and ordinances (design parameters), project impact analysis, precedent studies and early design studies such as study of relevant precedent studies, analytical diagrams, spatial organization and programming. That can be used as reference for the next phase in design.
PROJECT 1b: Schematic & Spatial Organization
Continue project 1a, this project is an individual progress project that will carry on to final project 1c.
This project required student to come up with an architectural intervention through design to address the aim and objectives mentioned in the studies and brief. Each are to design based on basic design objectives.
- To design spaces that will effectively to effectively translate the concept and idea of A ‘City Lobby’- A gathering point where if offers the needs of the people in the city but offering opportunities for cultural exchange.
- A design, which will create a positive impact to the public making more engaging and inviting, hence, encourage people to stay, connect and collaborate.
- A highly engaging design, which appeals to all demographics, social status and ethnicity. Wherein there will be specific considerations for the elderly, children and young adults. Such as ex: morning exercise area for elderly, interactive space for children and hangout space for young adults. Architecture that is inviting and welcoming to public, a second home for locals and warm experience for visitors and tourists.
- To incorporate an element of sustainability, wherein people thru design develop a sense of family, maintaining and preserving the place as if it is the City Lobby extension of their homes. Incorporate green design, giving people a healthier living environment.
- Design should comply with pertinent guidelines and regulations. Compliance with buildability, safety standards and user requirements
PROJECT 1c: Final Design & Report
Based on project 1b presentation, sketch design, consider and include expanded aspects of design development in tandem with the design of spaces, e.g. regulatory requirements, fire safety, materials, construction design/structural concept, sustainability, feasibility and other relevant considerations, wherever possible, integrating their dev’t to produce a richer, more multi-layered design.
Integrate environmental strategies into design. May look into current sustainable trends and design features. Exploration on the tectonic and poetic qualities of the design thru materiality and design elements such as light, texture and others.
Develop a selected portion of your building for technological development and resolution for architectural details. To present work in a most comprehensive, systematic, creative and comprehendible manner. Architectural Visualization, modelling and report.
